Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about prison visitation
General
How do I get on an inmate's visitor list?
The inmate must submit a visitor application form to add you to their approved visitor list. This process can take 1-2 weeks for approval. You may need to provide identification and consent to a background check.
How far in advance should I book my visit?
We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance. Some facilities require advance booking, while others accept walk-ins. Check with the specific facility for their policies.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my visit?
Contact the facility as soon as possible to cancel or reschedule. Most facilities require at least 24 hours notice. Use the contact information provided in your booking confirmation.
Arrival
What time should I arrive for my visit?
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled visit time. This allows time for parking, security screening, and check-in procedures. Late arrivals may result in a shortened visit or denial of entry.
What happens during the check-in process?
Upon arrival, you'll present your ID, sign in, and go through security screening (similar to airport security). You may be subject to a pat-down search and metal detector. All items will be inspected.
Identification
What forms of ID are acceptable?
Valid government-issued photo identification is required, such as a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. The ID must be current and not expired.
What if I don't have a valid ID?
Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to visit without valid photo identification. This is a security requirement at all facilities. Contact your local DMV or government office to obtain proper identification.
Children
Can I bring children to visit?
Yes, children are generally allowed to visit if they are on the approved visitor list. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Some facilities have special family visiting areas.
Do children need identification?
Children under 16 typically do not need photo ID, but may need to bring a birth certificate or other proof of identity. Check with the specific facility for their requirements.
During Visit
What can we do during the visit?
You can talk, play approved games (often provided by the facility), and share light refreshments from vending machines. Physical contact is limited to brief embraces at the beginning and end of the visit.
Can I take photos during my visit?
No, cameras and phones are strictly prohibited. Some facilities offer professional photo services for a fee. Ask the facility about their photo programs.
Are vending machines available?
Most facilities have vending machines in the visiting area. Bring small bills and coins (usually up to $20-40 is allowed). Credit/debit cards are not accepted.
Restrictions
What if I've been convicted of a crime?
Visitors with certain criminal convictions may be denied visitation privileges. Each facility has different policies. Contact the facility to determine if you are eligible to visit.
Can I bring gifts or items for the inmate?
No, visitors cannot bring items to give to inmates during the visit. Items must be sent through approved vendors or mailed according to facility guidelines. Contact the facility for approved vendor lists.
Special Circumstances
What accommodations are available for visitors with disabilities?
All facilities must comply with ADA requirements and provide reasonable accommodations. Contact the facility in advance to arrange wheelchair access, sign language interpreters, or other needed accommodations.
Can attorneys visit outside regular visiting hours?
Yes, attorneys and legal representatives typically have different visiting procedures and may schedule visits outside normal hours. Contact the facility's legal services department.
Contact Visits
What is a contact visit vs. non-contact visit?
Contact visits allow limited physical contact in an open visiting room. Non-contact visits are conducted through glass or video conferencing. The type of visit depends on the facility's security level and inmate classification.
Video Visits
Does the facility offer video visitation?
Many facilities now offer video visitation as an alternative to in-person visits. Check with the specific facility for their video visitation policies, scheduling, and fees.
